No official service network: where a Chinese car actually gets repaired

We have no workshop and we do not pretend to. What gets fixed anywhere, what has to be ordered in, what needs a specialist — and the list you get before you buy, not after.

We have no workshop. It is the first line on the "What we do not do" section, and the first thing we say on the phone. But "we have no workshop" does not mean "the car cannot be repaired". It means you need to know in advance where, how long, and how much. This article is that list.

Three categories of things that break

1. Consumables: anywhere. Pads, discs, cabin filters, wipers, tyres, 12 V batteries, brake fluid. Chinese cars use global suppliers — Brembo, Continental, Bosch — and standard sizes. Any decent workshop finds them by equivalence. You do not need anything branded.

2. Body panels: ordered in. Bumpers, headlights, mirrors, glass, metalwork. They are not held in stock in Romania. They come from China, or from European markets where the brand is present (ZEEKR already has a network in several countries). The realistic wait is two to six weeks. A broken headlight does not strand you, but it does leave you with a car that is waiting. We say so beforehand.

3. Battery and electronics: a specialist workshop. Diagnostics on high-voltage systems need the right tool and the right software. There are workshops in Bucharest, Cluj and Timișoara that work on Chinese brands, with technicians certified for high voltage. We give you the list before you buy. They are not ours and we take nothing from them.

Why less goes wrong

An electric motor has around twenty moving parts. A combustion engine, over two thousand. There is no clutch, no stepped gearbox, no timing belt, no turbo, no particulate filter, no exhaust system. The things that most often break on an ordinary car simply do not exist. What remains is the suspension, the brakes — which wear more slowly, because the car brakes regeneratively — and the electronics.

What actually happens in the first few years

From our experience and that of the workshops we work with, the most frequent jobs on a lightly used Chinese car are, in order: tyres (these cars are heavy and have a lot of torque, so they get through tyres), the 12 V battery (as on any modern car full of electronics on standby), pads occasionally, and the odd software update that did not install itself. Nothing on that list needs parts from China.

What cannot be fixed easily

Let us be honest: a battery failure outside the manufacturer's warranty — which you do not have — is expensive anywhere in the world, on any brand. On the cars on our list, the low mileage (500–15,000 km) and the history report reduce the risk; they do not remove it. How we check the battery.

Software and updates

The cars receive updates over the internet, but the manufacturer's servers are in China and the account is Chinese. Some features that depend on online services — maps, the voice assistant, the phone app — may not work, or may work in Chinese. What always works: the car itself, the menus, the cameras, the sensors, driver assistance, Bluetooth, and usually Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for navigation. We check on each car what works in Romania and tell you before you order.

What we actually do

  • We give you the list of workshops before you buy, with what each one handles.
  • At handover, the car's consumables have all been checked and its tyres carry European markings.
  • If you need a body panel, we order it through the same channels we import the cars through. It is not a warranty service; it is that we know where to look.
  • We tell you honestly when a repair is not worth it: a car with something expensive broken outside warranty is a question of money, not of mechanics.
